Genetics in support of fisheries and aquaculture management

Date: Tue. 17 Sep, 2019 9:00 am - Thu. 19 Sep, 2019 10:13 am
Duration: 2 Days, 1 Hour, 13 Minutes

Each year, the International Council for Exploration of the Sea (ICES), an intergovernmental organization that aims to enhance scientific knowledge of the marine environment and its living resources, offers training courses. For the first time, the 2019 ICES portfolio offers a 3-day course on the design and application of genetics and genomics in management and conservation of fisheries and aquaculture. The Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) and University of Algarve, Faro, Portugal, will host the course. Further details at: (http://rcastilho.pt/venue/index.html).

The training course will introduce participants to principles and practical application of genetics in fisheries and aquaculture including relevant evolutionary, quantitative- and population genetic theory. The course introduces a range of genetic and genomic tools that underpin management of aquatic natural resources, and how such approaches complement other management tools, together with a critical valuation of costs and benefits. We provide case studies that illustrate how genetics can help to address existing management and policy needs from capture and aquaculture fisheries.

Further details are appended and can be found on the ICEs website at: https://www.ices.dk/news-and-events/Training/Pages/genetics-in-support-of-fisheries-and-aquaculture-management.aspx.
