Selective breeding of aquaculture species has been a major driver for the global growth of aquaculture. Well designed breeding programmes have allowed balanced genetic improvement of fish traits leading to more profitable, ethical and environmentally friendly fish production. The upgrading of breeding programmes with genomic information has revolutionized breeding programmes. It especially allows more effective improvement of previously hard-to-improve traits such as disease resistance, product quality and processing traits, and traits that need to be improved across multiple farming environments. This webinar demonstrates the benefits of selective breeding for the aquaculture supply chain and the novelties in the industrial use of genomic selection, as developed in the AquaIMPACT EU-project.

The presentation first demonstrates that the traditional breeding programmes based on sire-dam-offspring pedigrees have been successful in improving not only typically production traits but also more challenging-to-record traits such as feed efficiency and fillet%. Then, the benefits of using genomic selection in industrial settings are demonstrated. The focus is on the combined use of pedigree information, genomic selection and major genomic regions determining fish traits.

John Bastiaansen: "Strategies for applying genomic selection in aquaculture: costs and benefits"
Genomic selection is mainstream for years in a few aquatic species. Recently many other species are incorporating genomic information in the breeding programmes. Cost for obtaining genotype data is an important factor when choosing between pedigree based, or genomic selection. Strategies to reduce genotyping costs will be presented, and the trade-off between costs and benefits will be demonstrated for different breeding program structures.

Antti Kause has over 20 years of experience of running and developing aquaculture breeding programmes for the benefit of aquaculture supply chain and consumers. Currently, he is the coordinator of the AquaIMPACT EU-project that develops genomic and nutritional innovations for the aquaculture industry of the 4 main farmed fish species in EU. https://projects.luke.fi/aquaimpact/
