Myron Peck EAStalk webinarsDr. Myron Peck will give an EAStalk webinar on July 15th at 14 (CET/Brussels time) on the effects of climate change on the European aquaculture sector

Dr. Myron Peck is Professor of Experimental Biological Oceanography at the University of Hamburg. His group uses knowledge on the physiology of invertebrates and fish, social-ecological field research, and various types of advanced modeling to understand the causes and effects of how environmental drivers (such as climate change) influence marine species, habitats and sectors such as aquaculture. The main goal is to provide robust, science-based advice for national, EU and international policy initiatives.

He co-chairs international working groups that examine marine climate impacts and is the Editor-in-Chief of two international journals. He has published >150 reports and peer-reviewed articles and has contributed to seven books on fish and climate effects. He has made invited keynote presentations at >10 international symposia including industry and policy events for fisheries and aquaculture.
Prof. Peck has also been involved in eight EU research projects and from 2016 to 2020 coordinated the H2020 Blue Growth project 'CERES' (ceresproject.eu). This project informs European fisheries and aquaculture industries and policy makers on the risks and opportunities posed by climate change.

Prof. Peck’s talk on July 14th will summarize what we have learned from recent EU programs about the effects of climate change on the European aquaculture sector. The talk will include projections of physical and biogeochemical impacts that are relevant to the culture of fish and shellfish and the biological consequences expected for key species grown in marine and freshwater farms. He will summarize recent economic work exploring the future profitability of different types of ‘typical farms’ and national rankings of the vulnerability of aquaculture to climate change. He will conclude by underscoring the importance of the continued involvement of aquaculture stakeholders in research programs providing science-based advice for climate adaptation of the sector including both bottom-up (industry led) and top-down (policy) solutions.
